Ludum Dare Compo rules: You must work alone, you must make all your own assets, art, sound, music.

To begin ideation, I started by sketching pictures of moths. I used Miro to flesh out some ideas for a game.

Pico-8 is a retro game engine that’s easy to get started with. Most of Saturday I spent watching tutorials, and searching community forums. After I designed a moth, wind, and health, I managed to implement a mouse input summoning screen but then couldn’t work out how to program registering a summoning spell :/ 😭. So I went to bed.

Sunday, I decided to simplify the mechanics considerably and binned my summon spell. Instead, you would summon ‘Moth Friends’ by planting flowers. You would need to eat the flowers to keep you health and continue surviving.

The final touches on Sunday evening included a little bit of level design, an inventory system (so you can see all the moths you summon), and some cover art and restart button! I submitted my game while it was clean, simple and working!

Now comes the best part, playing everyone’s games!
